Question 464129
A IS 27, B IS 9.
HOW MANY TIMES IS A GREATER THAN B.
(I THINK THE ANSWER IS 2, BUT THE BOOK ANSWER IS 3. I DON'T GET IT.
A IS AS 3 TIMES AS B. A IS 2 TIMES GREATER THAN B.
-------------
You're right, it is 2 times greater.
27 is 18 greater than 9.  18 = 2 times 9 --> 2 times greater.  Oddly, most people get it right when using %ages - it's 200% greater, not 300% greater.
The author of the book, and a lot of other people, have problems with English, apparently.

Consider, if it's 1 time greater, how much more is it? Does that mean it's twice as much, or the same? If it's the same, why does it say greater?
-----------------
Even worse, we hear something is 10 times smaller. What does that mean? If it's 1 times smaller, that makes it zero. How can it be 10x smaller?
------------------
You'll encounter ignorance like this many times in your life, not much you can do about it.
