sqrt(2x + 7) = 5 means

We know that if *[tex \Large a\ =\ b\ \ ] then *[tex \Large\ a^2\ =\ b^2]


We also know that *[tex \Large \left(\sqrt{a}\right)^2\ =\ a]


So square both sides of your equation and then proceed from there.
