If the radicals have a "like term" then they can be combined in a similar way to polynomials. For example, *[tex 5\sqrt{2} + 4\sqrt{2}] is a sum of two like radicals, and they can be added to produce *[tex 9\sqrt{2}]. Or, you could evaluate *[tex 5x^3 + 4x^3] to get *[tex 9x^3].
