Question 427962
One number is 4 more than twice the second number. Their total is 25. What are the 2 numbers.

Let x be the first number and y is the second number

x = 4 + 2y (1)
x + y = 25 (2)

Substitute (1) into (2)
4 + 2y  + y = 25
3y = 21
y = 21/3
y = 7

Substitute y = 7 into (1) to find x:

x = 4 + 2(7) = 4 + 14 = 18

Thus the first number is 18 and second number is 7
