Question 424038
you can show this in a easy equation like this where N=Number

4N-8=N+1

on the left we have eight less than four times a number because it is 8 less than 4N. on the right side we have the number increased by one which is just N+1. since both sides are equal if we do the same thing to both sides it will still be equal so lets add 8 to both sides...

4N-8=N+1
+8   +8
4N=N+9

now lets minus N from each side

4N=N+9
-N  -N
3N=9

now devide both sides by 3 to get your answer

3N=9
/3  /3
N=3
