Question 44156
y^2 - 4y + 3 = 0
Use the quadratic solver {{{y = (-b +- sqrt( b^2-4*a*c ))/(2*a) }}}
where
a=1
b=-4
c=3
Now {{{y = (4 +- sqrt( 4^2-4*1*3 ))/2 }}}
{{{y = (4 +- sqrt( 16-12 ))/2 }}}
{{{y = (4 +- sqrt( 4 ))/2 }}}
{{{y = 4/2 +- 2/2 }}}
{{{y = 2 +- 1 }}}
So y=1 or y=3

I hope this helps
P.S. I am trying to start up my own homework help website. I would be extremely grateful if you would e-mail me some feedback on the help you received to adam.chapman@student.manchester.ac.uk
