Question 402028
One runner passes another runner traveling in the same direction on a hiking trail.
 The faster runner is jogging 2 miles per hour faster than the lower runner.
Determine how long it will be before the faster runner is 3/4 mile ahead of the slower runner.
:
The relative speed between the runners is 2 mph therefore the problem is:
"How long will it take to travel 3/4 of a mile at 2 mph?" (use .75 mi)
Time = dist/speed
:
t = {{{.75/2}}}
t = .375 hrs which is .375(60) = 22.5 min
:
Response to student comment, we will do this without decimals
t = {{{(3/4)/2}}}
invert the divisor and multiply
t = {{{3/4}}} * {{{1/2}}}
t = {{{3/8}}}
