Question 401001
Hey there. :)
Okay, so what we are going to do in order to solve this system is multiply the
top equation (x-5y=36) by a negative 2. The reason that we are doing that is to
eliminate the x's when we add the two equations together.

So, when you multiply {{{x-5y=36}}} by a -2, you get {{{-2x+10y=-72}}}

Now, add your two equations together:
{{{-2x+10y=-72}}}+{{{2x+y=-16}}} and you get {{{11y=-88}}}
To get y by itself, we must divide both sides by 11. 11/11=1 and -88/11=-8
Therefore, y=-8.
Now, substitue the y value in the first equation to get your x value.
x-5(-8)=36
x-40=36
Add 40 to both sides to get x by itself.
x=76
Original problem: x-5y=36. Substitue x and y value to check solution.
76-(5*8)=36
76-40=36
36=36 :)

Hope this helped. Don't just copy down everything that I did though, because I could have made a mistake.
Good luck! :)
