Hi
Re: Standard form ax^2 + bx + c = 0, discriminant is b^2 - 4ac
discriminant of the equation
5x^2-3x=8
5x^2-3x- 8 = 0      |in standard form
 b^2 - 4ac
 3^2 - 4*(-40) = 9 + 160 = 169
Note: quadratic formula for solving this equation:
{{{x = (-b +- sqrt( b^2-4*a*c ))/(2*a)= (3 +- sqrt(169))/(10)  }}}
{{{x = (3 +- 13)/(10) }}}
   x = 1.6   x = -1
