That depends.  Is the selection John, Bill, and Alice the same or different from the selection Alice, John, and Bill?


If the order of the elements in the selection matters, that is J, B, and A is different than A, J, and B, then you want the number of Permutations of 5 things taken 3 at a time:

On the other hand, if order does NOT matter, then you want the number of Combinations of 5 things taken 3 at a time:
