Question 386785
<font face="Garamond" size="+2">

4 by 9 can't be correct.  4 times 9 is 36, not 14.

Let *[tex \Large w] represent the width of the rectangle. Then *[tex \Large w\ +\ 5] must represent the length. The area of the rectangle, given by multiplying length times width is 14, so:

*[tex \LARGE \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ w(w\ +\ 5)\ =\ 14]

Rearrange:

*[tex \LARGE \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ w^2\ +\ 5w\ -\ 14\ =\ 0]

Now just solve the quadratic.  Hint: It factors.  Extra hint:  7 + (-2) = 5 and 7 X -2 = 14.

*[tex \LARGE e^{i\pi} + 1 = 0]
My calculator said it, I believe it, that settles it
