Question 381022
Let x=first positive number
Then x+4=the other positive number
And we are told that:
x^2+(x+4)^2=136 simplify
x^2+x^2+8x+16=136 subtract 136 from each side and collect like terms
2x^2+8x-120=0 divide each term by 2
x^2+4x-60=0----quadratic in standard form and it can be factored:
(x+10)(x-6)=0
x=-10------no good! Problem specifies positive numbers
x=6----The first positive number
6+4=10 the second positive number
CK

6^2 + 10^2=136
136=136

Hope this helps---ptaylor
