Question 374883
<font face="Garamond" size="+2">

You have a bunch of stuff going on here, and none of it is correct. In the first place you cannot simply square parts of your equation and ignore the rest of it.

Hence, it is NOT correct to say that if *[tex \LARGE 28\ -\ 4\sqrt{2}\ =\ 24\sqrt{2}] then *[tex \LARGE 28\ -\ 4\left(\sqrt{2})\right)^2\ =\ 24\left(\sqrt{2}\right)^2].

Now, given *[tex \LARGE 28\ -\ 4\sqrt{2}\ =\ 24\sqrt{2}], it would be correct to perform the following operation:

*[tex \LARGE \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \left(28\ -\ 4\sqrt{2})\right)^2\ =\ \left(24\sqrt{2}\right)^2]

which works out to

*[tex \LARGE \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ 752\ -\ 224\sqrt{2}\ =\ 1152]

When you FOIL and collect terms in the LHS.

BUT -- that is all for naught because you began with a false statement, namely it is NOT true that

*[tex \LARGE \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ 28\ -\ 4\sqrt{2}\ =\ 24\sqrt{2}]

Add *[tex \LARGE 4\sqrt{2}] to both sides resulting in

*[tex \LARGE \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ 28\ =\ 28\sqrt{2}]

Which is clearly a false statement. If you divide both sides by 28 you know that the square root of 2 is certainly not equal to 1.

I'm concerned that you may have left something out of the original problem statement.

My calculator said it, I believe it, that settles it
