Question 365380
 two numbers differ by 8. The sum of twice the smaller and the larger is the same as twice the larger increased by 4.
x = smaller
y = x + 8 (larger)
2x + y = 2y + 4
2x = y + 4
2x = x+8 + 4 = x + 12
x = 12
--> 12 & 20

I am a 10th grade student. I have tried different numbers. I tried this but I can not figure out why I can not find the second number that should be 8 less than the larger number
I made up numbers to figure out how to come up with x and y. But I think I am missing one whole step where (x-8) should be.
x= one number and the other number is x-8
My formula that I tried is
2x + x-8) + 4= 90
2x+x-8+4=90
3x-4=90-4
3x=86
and then we got confused
