Question 356607
at the beginning of a bicycle ride for charity, roberto and juana are 30 miles apart. If they Leave at the same time and ride in the same direction, roberto overtakes juana in 6 hours. if they ride toward each other, they meet in 1 hour. what are their speeds?
let robreto's speed =x
juana's speed =y : x>y
distance = 30 miles apart
...
roberto catches up x=y mph
distance = speed * time
30=(x-y)*6
/6
x-y =5.....................1
...
when they ride toward the speed is x+ymph
distance = 30
distance = speed * time
30=1*(x+y)
x+y=30....................2
add 1 & 2
2x=35
/2
x= 35/2
= 17.5 mph robert's speed
...
x-y = 5
17.5-y=5
y=17.5-5
y=12.5 mph Juana's speed
