Question 352477
Product = multiplication
-
They are asking which two consecutive page numbers, when multiplied together will give you 156.
-
Based on experience, I know that 13*13 is 169. Seeing as 156 is 13 less than 169, that is the same as 12*13. Thereby giving you your two consecutive page numbers {{{highlight(12)}}}and {{{highlight(13)}}}.
-
If you set up this in algebraic form it looks like this:
{{{X(X+1)=156}}} OR {{{X(X-1)=156}}}, depending on whether you are calling X your higher or lower of the two consecutive numbers. This simplifies to {{{X^2-X=156}}}. From here, I personally do not know of any way to "theoretically" solve the problem. From this point on you would just plug and chug.

Hope this helps,
