Question 348988
The sum of two numbers is 20. Twice one number is 4 more than four times the other. Find the numbers.

Let the first number be F

Then the second is S

Then F + S = 20 ---- Multiply by - 2 to get: - 2F - 2S = - 40 ---- eq (i)
2F = 4S + 4____2F - 4S = 4 --- eq (ii)

Add eq (i) & (ii):  - 6S = - 36

S = {{{(-36)/-6 = 6}}}

Substitute 6 for S:  F + 6 = 20______F = 14

Smaller number = {{{highlight_green(6)}}} and larger number  =  {{{highlight_green(14)}}}
