Question 34159
Hello,
First Describe the variables and write the equation:
VARIABLES: a=Adults   3a=Children so,
EQUATION: {{{a+3a=80}}}
<p>
Now combine like terms:
{{{a+3a=4a}}}
<p>
You are left with:
{{{4a=80 }}} divide by 4
<p>
{{{80/4=20}}} SO, a=20 There were 20 Adults
<p>
restate the eqation for the children
{{{C=3a}}}
<p>
Plug in the numbers and multiply:
{{{3(20)=60}}}
<p>
So, there were 20 Adults and 60 Children.
<p>
<i><u>TO CHECK ANSWER</i></u>
restate the equation:
{{{a+3a=80}}}
Plug in the numbers:
{{{20+3(20)=80}}}
<p>
Multiply:
{{{3(20)=60}}}
<p>
You are left with:
{{{20+60=80}}} now add 20+60
<p>
{{{80=80}}} Therefore the answer is correct.
