Question 336299

{{{abs(x-1)-1=7}}} Start with the given equation

{{{abs(x-1)=8}}} Add 1 to both sides.

Break up the absolute value (remember, if you have {{{abs(x)=a}}}, then {{{x=-a}}} or {{{x=a}}})

{{{x-1=-8}}} or {{{x-1=8}}} Set the expression {{{x-1}}} equal to the original value 8 and it's opposite -8

Now lets focus on the first equation  {{{x-1=-8}}}

{{{x=-8+1}}}Add 1 to both sides

{{{x=-7}}} Combine like terms on the right side

<hr>

Now lets focus on the second equation {{{x-1=8}}}

{{{x=8+1}}}Add 1 to both sides

{{{x=9}}} Combine like terms on the right side

So the solutions to {{{abs(x-1)-1=7}}} are:

{{{x=-7}}} or {{{x=9}}}
