Question 336026

{{{(x+5)(3x-8)}}} Start with the given expression.

Now let's FOIL the expression.

Remember, when you FOIL an expression, you follow this procedure:

{{{(highlight(x)+5)(highlight(3x)-8)}}} Multiply the <font color="red">F</font>irst terms:{{{(x)(3x)=3x^2}}}.

{{{(highlight(x)+5)(3x+highlight(-8))}}} Multiply the <font color="red">O</font>uter terms:{{{(x)(-8)=-8x}}}.

{{{(x+highlight(5))(highlight(3x)-8)}}} Multiply the <font color="red">I</font>nner terms:{{{(5)(3x)=15x}}}.

{{{(x+highlight(5))(3x+highlight(-8))}}} Multiply the <font color="red">L</font>ast terms:{{{(5)(-8)=-40}}}.

---------------------------------------------------

So we have the terms: {{{3x^2}}}, {{{-8x}}}, {{{15x}}}, {{{-40}}}

{{{3x^2-8x+15x-40}}} Now add every term listed above to make a single expression.

{{{3x^2+7x-40}}} Now combine like terms.

So {{{(x+5)(3x-8)}}} FOILs to {{{3x^2+7x-40}}}.

In other words, {{{(x+5)(3x-8)=3x^2+7x-40}}}.
