Question 335223
x/2 + x/5 = 5/4
can I see this problem worked out and then checked?

x/2 + x/5 = 5/4
on left side we need common denominators

5/5 * x/2 + 2/2 * x/5 = 5/4 (we actually multiplying each fraction by one, so no change in values is actually done)

(5x)/10 + (2x)/10 = 5/4
(7x)/10 = 5/4
7x = 5/4 * 10 (multiplied both sides by 10)
7x = 50/4
28x = 50 (multiplied both sides by 4)
x = 50/28 = 25/14 = 1.7857 rounded to 4 places

check: (25/14)/2 + (25/14)/5
25/14 * 1/2 + 25/14 * 1/5 = 25/28 + 25/70 (need common denominators, 28 goes into 140 five times and 70 goes into 140 two times)
25/28 * 5/5 + 25/70 * 2/2 = 125/140 + 50/140 = 175/140
175/140 = 35/28 = 5/4

x = 25/14 = 1.7857 rounded to 4 places is indeed the solution
