Solve it in the following manner

We have to find the number of hours he worked on Saturday ??

Let the number of hours be = x

Now How many hours did he worked in total ??  

Yes 18

If he worked x hours on Saturday --  how many hours in the remaining week ??

18 - x      

Now we can formulate an equation to find the value of x

First tell me how much he will get for working (18 - x) hours 
 YES    (18 - x) * 4          ($4 multiplied by the number of hours worked)
AND for Saturday  he will get
          x * 6

SO EQN BECOMES     (18 - x)* 4 + x * 6 = 88
                    18 * 4 - x * 4 + x * 6 = 88
                      72 - 4x + 6x = 88
                            2x = 88 - 72
                            2x = 16
                             x = 16/2 = 8

So he worked for 8 hours on Saturday
ANd remaining (18 - 8) = 10 hours he worked in the remaining week.
