Question 330223
There are two consecutive even integers. The square of the larger one is three hundred eight more than the smaller one. Which of the following equations could you use to find the smaller integer?
----------------
A(x + 2)2 - 308 = x
B(x + 2)2 +- 308 = x
C(x + 1)2 + 308 = x
D(x + 1)2 = x - 308
E(x + 1)2 - 308 = x
F(x + 2)2= x - 308
-----------------------
Ans: E would be the best answer, but "x" is not the
way to symbolize and even integer.

Fact: Even integers are always multiples of 2.
----------------
1st: 2x
2nd: 2x+2
-----------
Equation:
(2x+2)^2 = 2x+308
4x^2+8x+4 = 2x+308
4x^2+6x-304 = 0
2x^2+3x-152 = 0
(2x + 19)(x-8) = 0
Positive solution:
x = 8
---
1st 2x = 16
2nd 2x+2 = 18
