Question 326957
First you should write out the word in equation form. Let l be the length of the rectangle and w be the width of the rectangle =). "The perimeter of a rectangle is 600": {{{2l+2w = 600}}}. I got this equation from knowing the defintion of perimeter: The perimeter of something is the length of all the sides. Now for the second secntence. "The length of the rectangle is 2 more than 3 times the width.": {{{l=3w+2}}}. If you plug {{{l=3w+2}}} into {{{2l+2lw = 600}}}, you get {{{2(3w+2)+2w = 600}}}. This becomes {{{6w+4+2w = 600}}}. Adding the w's together and subtracting 4 from both sides you get: {{{8w = 596}}}. Divide both sides by 8 to get w=74.5. Then you can plug w=74.5 into equation {{{2l+2w = 600}}} or {{{l=3w+2}}} to get the value of l. I'll plug w=74.5 into {{{l=3w+2}}} to get {{{l=3(74.5)+2}}}. Then solving for l you get l=225.5. So the rectangle is 74.5 by 225.5! ^0^
