Question 316965
personally i think thats a poorly written word problem if in book or by a teacher...Id simply state: "If twice a number added to 3 and divided by the number plus 1 is three halves, what is the number?"
{{{(2n+3)/(n+1)=(3/2)}}}
id treat this the same way one would solve a proportion, that being cross multiplying
{{{2(2n+3)=3(n+1)}}}distribute
{{{(4n+6)=(3n+3)}}}subtract 3n
{{{n+6=3}}}subtract 6
{{{highlight(n=-3)}}}
Check
{{{(2n+3)/(n+1)=(3/2)}}}
{{{(2(-3)+3)/((-3)+1)=(3/2)}}}
{{{((-6)+3)/(-2)=(3/2)}}}
{{{-3/-2=3/2}}}
{{{3/2=3/2}}}
Correct
