Question 298913
The discriminant is calculated from the numbers under the radical sign of the quadratic formula, that is to say the discriminant= {{{(b^2-4*a*c)}}}

So for your particular problem:{{{(7^2-4*5*-3)}}} which should equal 119 if my calculation is correct.

Rules of discriminants and their solutions:

if b^2-4ac >0 = Two unequal real solutions

if b^2-4ac = 0  = One real solution

if b^2-4ac <0 = no real solutions or two imaginary solutions.

So in this case, obviously 119 > 0 so you have 2 real solutions!

Hope this helps!
