Question 298681
three times a first number decreased by a second number is one. the first number increased by twice the second number is 12. find the numbers

let one number be x
& the other number be y

3x-y=1

x+2y=12 Multiply by 3 and subtract from above equation

3x-y -3(x+2y)=1 -3*12

3x-y-3x-6y=-35

-7y=-35
y=-35/-7

y=5

3x-y=1

3x-5=1

3x=6
x=6/2

x=2

x=2   y=5
