Read the book, but not like you would read a novel. You need to read it slowly and carefully and not read the next sentence until you completely understand the current one. If you get stuck, back up and reread the material. If you just can't "get" something, make a note to ask your teacher and then read on.   

Also it's important to do the exercises or things that they leave to the reader to verify.
