Question 279727
A Saab and a VW leave a toll area at the same time traveling in the same direction. The VW travel 2/3 the rate of the Saab. At the end of 4 hours they are 100 km apart. How fast is the Saab traveling.
this is how I am setting up these type of questions
d = r t
Saab - d = r 4
VW - d-100 = 2/3r 4
Is this correct, if so what now? If not what am I doing wrong?
-------------------
Saab DATA:
rate = x kmph ; time = 4 hrs : distance = 4x km
------------------
VW DATA:
rate = (2/3)x kmph ; time = 4 hrs ; distance = (2/3)4x = (8/3)x km
--------------------
Equation:
distance - distance = 100 km
4x - (8/3)x = 100
(12/3)x - (8/3)x = 100
(4/3)x = 100
x = 75 kmph (Saab rate)
(2/3)x = 50 kmph (VW rate)
