Add the two parts of the odds proportion to get the number of possible outcomes, that is, the denominator of your probability fraction.  Since 12:5 is the odds against winning, it is the odds in favor of losing.  Hence 12 is the number of losing outcomes, and 5 is the number of winning outcomes.
