Question 4200
When a number is expressed in scientific notation, you must have a number between -10 and 10 (that is, a single digit to the left of the decimal) times 10 raised to a power.

For examples, 4200 would be 4.2 x 1000 or 4.3 x 10^3
              423000 would be 4.23 x 100000 or 4.3 x 10^5.

The trick is to count the number of places you would have to move the decimal in order to get the decimal where you want it--that is, one digit to the left of the decimal.

For numbers that are smaller than 1, like 0.025, the result is the same as above, except you will need a negative exponent.

For examples, 0.025 move the decimal two places to the right to get 2.5 x 10^-2
              0.0000345 move the decimal 5 places to get 3.45 x 10^-5

Now to answer your questions.

A.  .000000523
     The number between 1 and 10 is 5.23, and you move the decimal 7 places
     Answer = 5.23 x 10^-7

B.   -834,000,000,000
     The number between -10 and 10 is -8.34, and you move the decimal 11 places
     Answer = -8.34 x 10^11
