Question 251265
Arthur walks six blocks east and then 12 blocks north.

If each block is one-third of a mile, how many miles did he walk?

If one block is 1/3 of a mile, do you see that....
two blocks are 1/3 + 1/3?
Three blocks would be: 1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3.

You can keep adding like that but a faster way to do this is to multiply. You can ask yourself: How many "one-thirds" did he walk?

Well, he walked six blocks east, so that is 6 times 1/3.

He also walked 12 blocks north, so that is 12 times 1/3.

Let's make that an equation:

{{{6(1/3)}}} + {{{12(1/3)}}} = ???

2 + 4 = 6

Therefore, he walked six miles.

I hope this helps you. :-)
