Question 249003
A rectangle is 3cm longer and 2cm narrower than a square with the same area. Find the dimensions of each figure.

Let x be a side of the square.
The area of the square is x*x = x^2.
The rectangle has dimensions x+3 and x-2.

The area of the rectangle is:

(x+3)*(x-2) = x^2

So:

x^2 + x - 6 = x^2 or
x = 6

Use this value of x to find the dimensions of the rectangle.
