Question 31127
Hello!
Please see my <a href="http://www.algebra.com/tutors/HOW_TO_Solve_Rate_of_Work_Problems.lesson?content_action=show_dev">lesson</a> on this kind of problems.

If Sally can paint the house in 4 hours, then she paints 1/4 of the house per hour.

If Jim can paint the house in 6 hours, then he paints 1/6 of the house per hour.

Therefore, when working together, their rate of work is {{{1/4+1/6 = 5/12}}} of the house per hour. Since they paint 5/12 of the house per hour, then they need 12/5, or 2.4 hours to paint the house together.

I hope this helps!
