Let's have x be one number and the other number represented by y. We can then set up two equations like this:
x+y=2
x-y=16 We can add both equations so y cancels out. 
2x=18  Divide both sides by 2 gives us:
x=9 Now plug 9 into either original equation to find y. 
y=-7 To check to see if these answers are correct, just plug them into both equations.
