*[tex \LARGE \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ f(x)\ = 6\ -\ x^2]

*[tex \LARGE \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ f(a-1)\ = 6\ -\ (a-1)^2]

Just multiply out the *[tex \Large (a-1)^2] using FOIL and then collect like terms. I think you are trying to make this more difficult than it is. It is a very simple process -- whatever appears in the parentheses next to the *[tex \Large f] gets put in place of the *[tex \Large x]. Then simplify.
