Question 234015
(√[6] + 2√[2])(4√[6] – 3√[2])
= {{{4*6 - 6*2 - 3sqrt(12) + 8sqrt(12)}}}
= {{{12 + 5sqrt(12)}}}
= {{{12 + 10sqrt(3)}}}
or = {{{12 + sqrt(300)}}}
-------------------
Most prefer the smallest value under the radicals. This is a holdover from pre-calculator days when logs and trig functions were found using printed tables.
Reducing to the smallest value inside the radicals is still useful when there are additional manipulations to be done, but if it's the end result, it's easier to find sqrt(300) than to find sqrt(3) then multiply by 10. Fewer buttons to push on the calculator reduces the chance of making a mistake.
