Question 231304
One number is 5 more than another. Three times the smaller number decreased by twice the larger number is = to 5 more than the smaller # what are the #s
------------------------------
Let x be a "larger number" and y be "a smaller number".
Equation:
x = y + 5
3y-2x = y+5
----------------------
Rearrange:
x = y + 5
2y = 2x+5
------------------
Substitute for "x" and solve for "y":
2y = 2(y+5)+5
2y = 2y+15
0 = 15
----------------
That is a contradiction and telly us the original set of
equations are inconsistent. There is no solution.
