Question 229420
one number is seven times a second number. four times the smaller number plus twice the larger number equals 36. find the number

Let the smaller number be S, and the larger number L

Since the larger is 7 times the smaller, then L = 7S

And, since 4 times the smaller number, plus twice the larger number = 36, then:
4S + 2L = 36

Therefore, we have: L  =  7S -----------(i)
....................................4S + 2L  = 36 ------ (ii)

Subbstituting 7S for L in eq (ii), we get: 4S + 2(7S) = 36

4S  +  14S  = 36

18S  =  36

S  =  {{{36/18 = 2}}}

Since S, or the smaller number = {{{highlight_green(2)}}}, then the larger number, or L = {{{highlight_green(14)}}} ---- (7 * 2)
