Question 229259
The length of a rectangular swimming pool is 2 meters more than its width. If the perimeter is 60 meters, find all dimensions. Please include a let statement.

Step 1. Perimeter P means adding up all 4 sides of a rectangle.

Step 2. Let w be the width.

Step 3. Let w+2 be the length since length is 2 meters more than the width.

Step 4. Then, P=w+w+w+2+w+2=4w+4=60 since perimeter is 60 meters

Step 5. Solving yields {{{P=4w+4=60}}} the following steps

Subtract 4 from both sides of the equation

{{{4w+4-4=60-4}}}

{{{4w=56}}}

Divide by 4 to both sides of the equation

{{{cross(4)w/cross(4)=56/4}}}

{{{w=14}}} and {{{w+2=16}}}. Then {{{P=2(14+16)=60}}} which is a true statement.

Step 5. ANSWER: The dimensions of the rectangle are 14 meters and 16 meters.

I hope the above steps were helpful.
