Question 228526
The perimeter of a rectangular screen is 272 inches. If the length of the screen exceeds twice its width by 10 inches, what is the screen length and width?

Step 1. Perimeter P means adding up all 4 sides of a rectangle.

Step 2. Let w be the width.

Step 3. Let 2w+10 be the length since the length exceeds twice its width by 10 inches

Step 4.  Then, P=w+w+2w+10+2w+10=6w+20=272

Step 5. Solving yields the following steps:

Subtract 20 from both sides of the equation

{{{6w+20-20=272-20}}}

{{{6w=252}}}

Divide by 6 to both sides of the equation

{{{6w/6=252/6}}}

{{{w=42}}} and {{{2w+10=94}}}. Then P=2(42+94)=272 which is a true statement.

Step 6. ANSWER: The width is 42 inches and the length is 94 inches.

I hope the above steps were helpful.
