Question 228227
A certain number is 4 less than another number. If the sum is 46, find the numbers.

Step 1. Let n be one number.

Step 2. Let n-4 be another number.

Step 3. Then, n+n-4=46 since their sum is 46.

Step 4. Solving yields the following steps

{{{2n-4=46}}}

Add 4 to both sides of the equation

{{{2n-4+4=46+4}}}

{{{2n=50}}}

Divide by 2 to both sides of the equation

{{{2n/2=50/2}}}

{{{n=25}}} and {{{n-4=21}}}. Also note that their sum is 46.

Step 5. ANSWER: The numbers are 21 and 25.

I hope the above steps were helpful.
