Question 227273
The sum of 2 consecutive even integers is 86. Find the larger number?

Step 1. Let n be the small even integer.

Step 2. Let n+2 be the larger even integer.

Step 3. Then, n+n+2=86 since the sum of the even integers is 86.

Step 4. Solving, yields the following steps.

{{{2n+2=86}}}

Subtract 2 from both sides of the equation

{{{2n+2-2=86-2}}}

{{{2n=84}}}

Divide by 2 to both sides of the equation

{{{2n/2=84/2}}}

{{{n=42}}} and {{{n+2=44}}}. Note the sum is 86.

Step 5. ANSWER: The numbers are 42 and 44.

I hope the above steps were helpful.
