Step 1.  Add 5 to both sides of the equation to get numbers on one side only and variables on the other side.

Step 2.  Check solution with the original equation  {{{a - 5 = 4}}} 


{{{9-5=4}}}


Step 3.  ANSWER:  Solution is {{{a=9}}}.
