Question 226269
The second of two numbers is 4 times the first. Their sum is 50. Find the number.

Step 1. Let x be the first number.

Step 2. Let 4x be the second number since it is 4 times the first.

Step 3. Let x+4x=50 be the sum of the two numbers and is given as 50.

Step 4. Solving the equation in Step 3 leads to the following steps.

{{{5x=50}}}

Divide by 5 to both sides of the equation to get x

{{{5x/5=50/5}}}

{{{x=10}}} and {{{4x=40}}}. Also, the sum of 10 and 40 is 50 as a check of the solution.

Step 5. ANSWER: The numbers are 10 and 40.

I hope the above steps were helpful.
