Question 225609
a b747 aircraft flew 6hours with the wind.
The return trip took 7 hours against the wind.
If the speed of the plane in still air is 13 times the speed of the wind, find the wind speed and the speed of the plane in still air.
:
Actually there is no way of knowing, proceed this way
:
let x = speed of the wind
and
13x = speed of the plane
then
(13x + x) = 14x is the speed with the wind
and
(13x - x) = 12x is the speed against the wind
:
The distance there and back are the same so write a distance equation:
:
6(14x) = 7(12x)
84x = 84x
Which means there are any number of values for the wind speed
Whatever it is, the speed of the plane will be 13 times the speed of the wind
