Question 224752
The perimeter of a rectangle is 36 m. The length is 3 m more than twice the width. Find the dimensions.

Step 1. The perimeter P means adding up all the four sides of a rectangle.

Step 2. Let w be the width.

Step 3. Let 2w+3 be the length since it is 3 more than twice the width

Step 4. Then, P=w+w+2w+3+2w+3=36.

Step 5. Solving yields the following steps

*[invoke explain_simplification "w+w+2w+3+2w+3=36"]

For w=5 , then 2w+3=13 and P=2(5+13)=36 which is a true statement.

Step 6. ANSWER: The width is 5 meters and the length is 13 meters.

I hope the above steps were helpful.
