Question 224571
The length of a rectangle is three centimeters greater than the width. If the perimeter equals 54 centimeters.

Step 1. The perimeter P means adding up all the four sides of a rectangle.

Step 2. Let w be the width.

Step 3. Let w+3 be the length

Step 4. Then, P=w+w+w+3+w+3=54.

Step 5. Solving yields the following steps

*[invoke explain_simplification "w+w+w+3+w+3=54" ]

For w=12 , then w+3=15 and P=2(12+15)=54 which is a true statement.

Step 6. ANSWER: The width is 12 cm and the length is 15 cm.

I hope the above steps were helpful.
