You could say that this does NOT make sense.  It would make sense to use ymx+b if one of the points IS the y intercept (and the slope could be easily calculated!).  Most people use the slope formula {{{m=(y2-y1)/(x2-x1)}}} and the point slope formula {{{y-y1=m(x-x1)}}}.


On the other hand, a lot of people (including myself!) DO use the y=mx+b formula to find the equation of a line, by using the slope formula (see above) to find the slope, and then solving for b.
