Question 224007
Amy paid $72.25 for a pair of running shoes during a 15%-off sale. What was the regular price?

Step 1.  Percentage of 15% means 0.15.

Step 2. Let x be the regular price of the running shoes.

Step 3. Let 0.15x be the amount off the regular price due to the sales of 15%.

Step 4. Let x-0.15x be the sales price.

Step 5.  Then x-0.15x=72.25 or  0.85x=72.25.

Divide by 0.85 to both sides to get the sales price.

{{{0.85x/0.85=72.25/0.85}}}

{{{x=85}}}

Step 6. ANSWER: The regular price is $85.00.

I hope the above steps and explanation were helpful.
